London’s housing crisis is growing ever more acute, but with available land in short supply, Southwark Council recently announced a rather unique programme for the production of desperately needed council houses.
In a process known as ‘rooftop’ or ‘airspace’ development, the houses will be built on the top of existing buildings, thus eliminating the need to source new land for construction. In today’s post, we explore whether rooftop development constitutes a viable solution to London’s housing shortage.
